This private walking tour will help you discover the traditional Florentine street food.
You will try the iconic Tuscan “schiacciata” or “flat bread” at one of the most historic shops in town. This simple yet very tasty “panino” is perhaps the most celebrated street food in Florence. The bread is very spongy but crunchy on the outside and you can stuff it with anything you like – one cold cut at a time, though, that’s the rule!
You will try the lovely “coccoli”, which is fried dough stuffed with sausages or truffles. Tuscans usually have coccoli with “stracchino” cheese (soft cheese from the Italian for “stanco” or “stracco”, meaning “tired”) and prosciutto, so when in Florence, why not do what we do?
For the more adventurous, you can try Lampredotto! It’s boiled tripe with green sauce or spicy sauce. I know what you’re thinking but, as we always say, don’t knock it until you try it! If you’re not up for it, we have an option, so don’t freak out! An amazing Tuscan bruschetta with handmade liver pate and fresh tomatoes and basil will definitely meet your taste.
We will then show you the Wine Windows that have made Florence famous worldwide. There are over 100 wine windows in Florence, but not all of them are operating. We will have you try out one of the oldest in town and tell the fascinating history behind these “holes in the wall”. Of course, you can also try some Chianti wine!
No food tour is complete without traditional handmade Florentine gelato. Did you know that Bernardo Buontalenti, the Medici architect, invented the original gelato recipe in the Boboli Gardens? He made a soft cream with some milk and eggs, which he mixed with salted ice and wine. Then, he flavored everything with bergamot, lemon and orange tinges to give the velvety concoction a citrusy kick! Voilà!
